IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph J.
Appleton
August 15, 1993 – October 3, 2023
Joseph John Appleton, "Joe", died on October 3, 2023 at his home in Glen Burnie, MD. He was 30.
Born in Reading, Pennsylvania on August 15, 1993, he was the son of Kathleen and the late Brian Appleton, Sr.
As a child, Joe was active in many organizations and sports. A natural athlete, Joe engaged in swimming, baseball, football, soccer, basketball, and tennis to name a few. He held various roles in his family's church including acolyte, was involved in Boy Scouts, and took piano lessons. Joe was known for supporting those in his community who needed help, whether that was yard work for an older neighbor or spending time with someone who needed company. One of many memorable moments for Joe in high school was when he participated in the Kairos retreat with his class. Joe was an instrumental student voice and advocate when his high school, Holy Name, completed a merger with another local school, Reading Central Catholic, to become Berks Catholic. Joe graduated from Berks Catholic High School in 2012 where he served as their co-class president his senior year.
Joe went on to attend Mount St. Mary's University in Maryland where he studied computer science with a minor in cyber security. During his time at The Mount, Joe was voted Mr. Mount his freshman year and served as the SGA Vice President for the Class of 2016 his sophomore and junior years. Joe had an opportunity as a rising senior to participate in a prestigious program at University of Cambridge in London, England to study in the International Security and Intelligence program. He was a member of the university Dance Team and was a meritorious winner of the highly competitive COMAP math modeling competition. One of the most important things Joe gained from his time at Mount St. Mary's was the strong brotherhood he found in his friends who he loved dearly.
Joe was passionate about technology and exploring new interests. He enjoyed his job with DCS Corporation where he was a software engineer and thrived in the environment that challenged his thinking. When not at work Joe enjoyed creating digital artwork, hiking, gardening, playing piano or listening to music and spending time with Bailey and his friends. Having recently become a homeowner, Joe also enjoyed dreaming up home improvement projects. He was a wonderful storyteller and enjoyed entertaining others. Joe was best known for his spontaneity, joyous spirit, and contagious laughter.
Joe is survived by his wife, Bailey, and their cat, Milo, who he adored; mother, Kathleen of Mohnton, PA; brother, Brian (Maya) Appleton, Jr. of Boston, MA; maternal grandmother, Jeannette Reedy of Reading, PA; along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is predeceased by his father, Brian; maternal grandfather, Joseph Reedy; and paternal grandparents, Melvin and Kathleen Brown Appleton.
