Daniel Darby Youngblood, 51, of Severna Park, MD, died in a boating accident on Sunday, May 27, 2018. He is survived by his daughter Darby, his daughter's mother Carla, sister Terri Savage, brother-in-law Brett Savage, and two nieces Riley and Reese. He is preceded in death by his father, Donald and mother, Nancy.
Dan's true passion in life was wrestling which he enjoyed as a young boy with his father and where his wrestling legacy began. He graduated from Old Mill Senior High in 1985 as a State Champion wrestler. He was a wrestling coach for most of his adult life. Young wrestlers he coached remember him fondly and credit him not just for making them into tough wrestlers, but for giving them life lessons. He was a "second father" to so many young wrestlers. His leadership led to one champion wrestler each year during his 22 years of coaching. Throughout his illustrious career, Dan coached at Broadneck, Glen Burnie, Martin Spaulding, Old Mill, Mount Saint Joe (MSJ), St. Paul's, and most recently at the MSJ youth program. While at MSJ, Dan achieved the highest success for his wrestlers achieving MIS, MIAA, and National Prep championships. That success was only the beginning as Dan had the opportunity to return to his alma mater Old Mill, traditionally a wrestling powerhouse in Maryland. With that, Dan took the program to new heights, winning multiple county, region and state titles both individually and as a team. It is known by those that knew Dan best that he developed these young men with a mindset to win on the mat, but more importantly, he set them up to win in life. Over his career Dan coached kids that went on to wrestle at prestigious universities such as Penn, Harvard, Cornell, Stanford, Bucknell, to name a few. He loved to help kids find success through hard work and perseverance. Dan relished the opportunity to develop his wrestlers into outstanding members of society.
Dan was a University of Pittsburgh graduate, where he wrestled and earned a BS in computer and information sciences and support services. After graduation, he went on to become a successful business owner. His company sold and supported Point of Sale (POS) systems for restaurants. He had an extended family with all his friends from his work with Restaurant Manager.
Dan's true love was his daughter Darby; he loved spending time with her. Whether it was on his boat, going out to dinner, Friday night movies at his beach, she was his world. She was his pride and joy and his legacy will live on in her.
For all those who knew and loved Dan, we will be having a Celebration of Life on Saturday, June 16 th from 12pm – 5pm at Michael's Eighth Avenue located at 7220 Grayburn Drive Glen Burnie, Maryland. Contributions will be accepted for the Dan Youngblood Wrestling Scholarship Fund to support the wrestlers he loved so much!
