William Smith
William Clifton "Bill" Smith, 73, of Arnold, died of cancer April 19 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born March 21, 1933, in Baltimore, Mr. Smith was the son of Archie Smith and Emma Smith-Beavers. He was reared in Severna Park and graduated from Annapolis High School in 1951. While in the Army he was stationed in Germany and was honorably discharged on March 31, 1962.
His career with C&P Telephone Co. in Annapolis spanned 43 years. In addition, he served more than 50 years as a member of the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Department where he was both chief and president. He was an honorary member of the Ocean City Volunteer Fire Co.
Other organizations to which he belonged included Assateague Mobile Sportsfishermen Association, Outer Beaches Preservation Association, North Carolina Beach Buggy Association and the American Legion in Severna Park, where he was chaplain.
His interests included fishing, watching NASCAR racing, Baltimore Orioles baseball and traveling to North Carolina and Montego Bay in Ocean City, where he owned a second home.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Barbara Lee Shiroky Smith; four daughters, Kimberly Ann Holloway and Amy Gail Williams, both of Berlin, and Patricia Lee Smith and Helen Barton Thomas, both of Pasadena; and nine grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will follow in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery, 78 Church Road, Arnold.
