William Harry "Bill" Schwarz, Sr., 84 of Severna Park, MD, and a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, passed into the arms of the Lord on December 19, 2010 after a brief illness. From 1997 until 2006 Bill was a resident of Queenstown, MD and a member of the Church of St. Peter the Apostle in Queenstown, MD
Bill grew up in the Wyman Park area of Baltimore City and attended parochial grade school at St's. Phillip & James. After finishing Baltimore Polytechnic in February 1945, he served in the Navy for 18 months spending time in Chicago, Mississippi, Texas and Norfolk, Va. In 1950, he graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in civil engineering and a commission in the U.S. Army Reserve. In June of 1950, he married Jane Imbach. He was called to active duty by the Army in August 1950 and served at Camp Carson, Colorado for 4 months, Japan for 2 months and Korea for 16 months. After serving in the military, Bill went on to work with McLean Contracting Company of Baltimore, MD building docks and bridges in the mid-Atlantic area for 33 years until his retirement as Senior Vice President in 1985. While employed by McLean, Bill earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from Johns Hopkins University in 1968. After retiring from McLean, he did consulting work with Maryland State Highway Administration and Gahagan & Bryant Engineers.
Among his many contributions to the community, Bill was formerly a member of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Replacement National Capital Planning Commission, Chairman of the Construction Panel of the Severn River Bridge Design Competition, President of the YMCA of Anne Arundel County, Board Member of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Baltimore, Board Member of the Museum of Industry in Baltimore, Board Member of the Olde Severna Park Improvement Association and Board Member of Scholarships for Scholars, Inc. in Anne Arundel County.
Bill was predeceased by his parents John and Marie Schwarz of Baltimore and his wife of 43 years Jane Imbach Schwarz of Severna Park.
He is survived by his wife, Jane (Phillips) Schwarz whom he married in 1996, four sons, W. Harry and wife Cathy of Columbia, John "Jay" and wife Camilla of Annapolis, Michael G. and wife Phoebe of Lebanon, New Hampshire, and Stephen and wife Cheryl of Hurlock, eight grandchildren; Jane, Christopher, Maren and Hannah Schwarz, Natalie and Elizabeth Ross, Taylor and Timothy Rogers. Bill is also survived by two sisters Ann Keene of Baltimore, and Jane Reed of Easton.
Friends may gather on Wednesday December 22, 2010 from 2-4 & 6-8pm at the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home 405 Ritchie Hwy. Severna Park, MD 21146. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30am on Thursday December 23 at the Church of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic 689 Ritchie Hwy. Severna Park. MD 21146
