Severna Park, MD – William A. Hoffman, Jr., 88 died Monday, January 16, 2017 at Future Care of the Chesapeake in Arnold MD following a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy Mae (Poist) Hoffman and his sister Bernice (Hoffman) Hampson.  He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Nancy (Ireland) Hoffman; his daughter, Diane Patricia Ford; his son, Douglas William Hoffman; his granddaughter, Suzanne Patricia Ford; his grandson, Stephen Edward Ford; his stepchildren, Craig M. Beynon, Christine A. Quinones and Mark Beynon; and many close friends.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of William Arthur Hoffman, Sr. and Amelia Tiedemann Hoffman, he was a lifelong resident of Maryland.

A 1946 graduate of Forest Park High School, Mr. Hoffman worked for Pittsburgh Plate Glass.  He met his wife, Dorothy Mae at Forest Park High School and they were married in 1950 at Pimlico Baptist Church.  In 1951, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served as an Electrician's Mate, 3rd Class.

After serving with the Coast Guard, Mr. Hoffman had the opportunity to work for the merchant marine companies of Dickman, Wright & Pugh and States Marine Isthmian where he developed his love of the Port of Baltimore.  Mr. Hoffman studied business management at the University of Baltimore, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1961.  From 1968 to 1983, he worked at South Baltimore General Hospital (now Medstar Harbor Hospital) where he served as the Vice President of Human Resources.  In 1983, he worked selling sailboats at Island Yacht Brokers on Kent Island, Maryland.

After his first wife, Dorothy Mae died in 1995; Mr. Hoffman married Nancy (Ireland) Hoffman.  The two resided in Severna Park and were beloved members of the community.

Mr. Hoffman had a passion for sailing.  He spent many summers racing on the Magothy River and Chesapeake Bay.  He belonged to numerous sailing clubs including the Grachur Club (serving as President), the Potapskut Sailing Association, Magothy River Sailing Association, the Wind Jammers and the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association.  He also enjoyed cruising on the Chesapeake Bay with his family.

Family and friends may visit on Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 4:00 pm-7:00 pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy, in Severna Park. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 11:00 am at Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Road, in Severna Park. Burial will be private.
