William H. (Bill) Bridger, 92, passed away on September 11, 2011. A sixty-year resident of Severna Park, Bill was an avid golfer, fisherman, and gardener. A charter member of Bay Hills Golf Club, he and his wife of 63 years, Mary Weber Bridger, also loved to tour southern states in the winter with their golfing friends to fit in as much golf as possible each year.

Bill was born in 1919 in Akron, Ohio to Marie and George Bridger. He attended Kenmore High School in Akron and was then employed in the accounting department of Babcock and Wilcox Boiler Company in Barberton, Ohio. He continued his education at Akron University.

Serving from 1941 to 1945 in the United States Army during World War II, Bill was assigned to the newly activated 42nd Machine Records Unit. He was later assigned to the European Command and served in Norway and France until March. He crossed Omaha Beach on June 8, 1945 and later served in St. Lo. He remained on duty in France until November, 1946.

After the War, Bill worked at Fort Meade with the First Army. One of his first assignments was to replace antiquated equipment with computers which required identifying adequate facilities, supervising installation of proper flooring and air conditioning and installing the actual computer equipment. Bill's was the first army unit to transition to computerized procedures. In 1961, Bill was promoted and transferred to the U.S. Army's Comptroller's Office. In 1963, he assisted in the planning for and installation of the first mainframe computers to be used for basic operating procedures.

After retirement, Bill had more time to devote to his interests and memberships which included the Fleet Reserve Club, Bay Hills Golf Club, Woods Memorial Church, American Legion Post 175 and the Fort Meade Officers Club.

Bill is survived by his wife, Mary, daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Michael Wilson, his grandson, Andrew and granddaughter Leigh. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his two older brothers, George and John. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
