Walter Lewis Wichita, 90, died February 23, 2012 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Severna Park. He was born October 31, 1921 in Omaha Nebraska, son of the late Arnold and Mary Wichita. He had been a long term resident of Arnold, MD & Towson, MD since 1967.

He entered the Army Air Corps in 1940. He married Mary Jane Bein of Fort Worth, TX in June 1944 while in flight training. He was commissioned as a pilot in the U.S Air Force in 1949 and after serving at several stations throughout the world most notably Japan, the Arctic, Oregon, Washington, Tucson, Arizona, New Mexico, California, New York and Colorado. His favorite plane to fly was the C-47, nicknamed the "Gooney Bird". He retired from the Air Force in 1966 and moved to Towson, MD where he worked at Bendix Company. He was an active member in the Shore Acres community, St John the Evangelist Church, The Optimist club, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and the Society for American Value Engineering.

His hobbies included Lapidary, boating, fishing, camping and photography. He also loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Noppinger, her husband Dr. Robert Noppinger; Maureen Rogers and her husband Marvin Rogers and his son Michael Wichita. He is also survived by 8 loving grandchildren, Michael Wichita of Washington, DC, Nicholas Noppinger of Colorado, Liz Noppinger & Darren Sutherland of California, Mary Noppinger of MD, Jennifer Rogers of MD, Jessica Rogers of California and Julie Rogers of MD; his sisters Agnes Stark of Omaha, Marie Scott of Missouri; his brothers James Wichita of Omaha and Arnold Wichita of Texas.

He is preceded in death by his grandchild Matthew Wichita and his wife of 66 years Mary Jane Wichita.

Friends may visit on Monday February 27, 2012 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway Severna Park, MD 21146. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 28 at 11:00am at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Highway Severna Park, MD 21146. Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville, MD. Memorials in his name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project 4899 Belfort Rd Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
