Obituary
Walter A. Truax, resident of Severna Park since 1964 years died of respiratory failure on Friday, March 14, 2008 at his home in Severna Park. Born July 14, 1929 in Utica, NY, Mr. Truax was very active in local Community Affairs and member of the Olde Severna Park Improvement Association for the past 41 years serving on the Board for several years and as President for three. In 1980 the community nominated him and was recognized as "Man of the Year" at the annual greater Severna Park Community Awards Ceremony. He enlisted in the Air Force and served from 1948 to 1955 and at the outbreak of the Korean War was a Cryptographer at SAC Headquarters in Omaha Nebraska. It was here he met his future bride, Abbie Reh and almost immediately after their marriage in July 1951, was transferred to England where he was assigned to RAF Station Manston in Kent. His wife was able to join him shortly thereafter where they spent three wonderful years. Upon discharge from the service they moved to Maryland and in 1957 Walter was employed by United Air Lines at Friendship Airport until his retirement in 1988. During the 32 years he spent at the now BWI Airport, he was involved in many changes in the Aviation Industry seeing his company grow from two Piston Engine Propeller flights per day to the largest carrier with over 50 jets. In 1983 he coordinated the movement of the US Naval Academy in conjunction with the Army-Navy game played in Pasadena California. The movement of the 4400 Brigade of Midshipmen and associated services involved the departure of 17 wide body jet aircraft from Baltimore to Los Angeles. Both Admiral Charles Larson, Superintendent of the Academy and Richard Ferris, Chairman of United Airlines awarded recognition for an operation in a "flawless manner". The family participated in the sponsorship program at the Naval Academy and became mentors for many Midshipmen who would refer to him as "Capt'n". His love of sailing the Chesapeake for many years prompted him to obtain his U.S. Coast Guard Captains license and was a co-founder of the "Annapolis Sailing Society" consisting of a group of fellow employees from United. For several years he would Captain and charter the famous Morgan 41's or 46 in the Caribbean to sail the blue waters of the Virgin Islands. In addition to OSPIA, his membership included, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Glen Burnie J.C's, and was an Officer for many years in the Friendship Airport Manager's Club. In addition to his wife Abbie, he leaves four children, Walter (Buddy) Truax III of McKinney, TX; Mary Ellen Ruddick of Fort Meyers Beach, FL; Linda L. Truax of Severna Park, MD and Ann Barry Vazquez of Gambrills MD, a brother, Charles Barry Truax of Ruxton, MD and two grand-children.
