Walter Counsell Carter, 86, a longtime resident of Severna Park, passed away at Baltimore Washington Medical Center on September 22, 2010 due to complications from Parkinson's Disease.
Walter was born on September 26, 1923 in Unity Township, OH, where he was also raised. In addition, he lived in Shreveport, LA, as well as Westfield and Whippany, NJ prior to moving to Severna Park in 1962.
Mr. Carter served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific on the USS Merriwether. Mr. Carter entered the Electronics Training Program, one of the most challenging training programs during WW II.
Walter earned a Bachelor's Degree in Physics from Geneva College. He was first employed with the Philco Corporation in Bangor ME, and later with Bell Labs in New Jersey. Upon moving to Severna Park, Mr. Carter was employed as a research engineer for Electromagnetic Compatibility Analysis Center (ECAC). Later, he worked with the Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute (IITRI) and then with Alion Science and Technology Corporation in Annapolis.
He was an active member of St. Martins in the Field Church, where he served on the church vestry and sang in the choir. His help was instrumental in acquiring the church's pipe organ. Walter was also a past president and board member of the North Severna Park Community Association.
Mr. Carter is survived by his wife, Mary Carter, whom he married on November 12, 1951; his children, Pamela C. Thompson of Cary, NC, Deanna Carter of Raleigh, NC, Jeffrey T. Carter of Millersville, MD, James W. Carter of Ivoryton, CT, Cynthia C. Pfanstiehl of Silver Spring, MD, Bruce E. Carter of Severna Park, John S. Carter of Arnold, MD, Donald L. Carter of New York, NY and Scott A. Carter of Nashville, TN; his brother, Thomas Carter of Columbiana, OH; as well as, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy W. Carter.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation at the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home on Friday, September 24th from 1-3pm and 6-8pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Martins in the Field Church on Saturday, September 25th at 1:00pm with the interment to follow at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Martins in the Field Church Pipe Organ Fund, 375 Benfield Road Severna Park, MD 21146.
