Vytautas Kazys
Dulys
Nov 10, 1935 — Jul 25, 2026
Vytautas Kazys Dulys (‘Vytas’) of Crownsville, MD, passed peacefully on July 25, 2026 in his home with his wife of 60 years, Elaine, and his four children by his side. Vytas will be remembered for his incredible work ethic, benevolence, vitality and immense pride in his Lithuanian roots. While never forgetting his heritage, he assimilated into his new life in his new country with pride and vigor. He became a Naturalized Citizen of the USA in 1955 and served in the United States Army’s 620th Engineering Company from 1957 to 1960 - thankful to his new homeland for the opportunities afforded to him and his family.
Vytas is survived by his wife Elaine Dulys (Mandato) and his four children and 9 grandchildren: Monika Bauman and her husband Mark of Pasadena, MD, (Jacob, Emma and Brett Bauman) his daughter Michelle Stein and her husband David of Succasunna, NJ, (Flora, Lily and Violet Stein) his daughter Mirga Dulys and her companion Douglas Butschky, and his son Vytas Paul Dulys and his wife Wendy (Tanner, Skyler and Brynn Chaplain), of Crownsville, MD.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, Kazys and Monika Dulys, his eldest sister Aldona Bankaitis and younger brother Vincent Dulys.
Vytas, the eldest son of 7 children, was born in Alytus, Lithuania in 1935. His early years were marked by war and political unrest. Forced to flee Lithuania on foot as a young boy, he and his family traversed war-torn Europe finding themselves in displaced persons camps until their immigration to the United States in the summer of 1949. The family settled in Baltimore, MD where Vytas attended St. Alphonsus Catholic School, Calvert Hall and Baltimore Junior College studying structural engineering. He was also an active member of the Lithuanian community participating in alter services, athletics, folk dancing, and choir.
In the early 1960’s, after his discharge from the military and with money carefully saved, Vytas, with his new bride Elaine, fulfilled their vision of the American dream. They purchased a riverfront lot in Arden on the Severn in Crownsville Maryland and painstakingly built their home where the two would raise their family and reside for over 50 years.
A steel detailer, self-taught brick mason and later a plans examiner for the city of Rockville Maryland, Vytas was widely respected for his expertise in structural design and masonry. He took pride in contributing to several well-known area landmarks, including the Fort McHenry tunnel, the Baltimore RESCO building, the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, and the BWI Airport terminal renovation, then known as Friendship Airport. He took the same pride in making improvements to his own home or helping a friend with theirs. His remarkable talent for brick and stone masonry is still evident around his home and in the homes of many family members and friends.
Vytas was a long time member of the Lithuanian Hall Association and held many leadership positions throughout the years. He was active in the Lithuanian Sport Club, Lithuanian Choir and Quartet and a tireless advocate for the Lithuanian Community. He loved all things sporting but excelled in racquetball and tennis. An original member of the Severna Park Racquetball Club he continued to participate in racquet sports – frequently 3 times a week – through his 87th year.
