Vincent DePaul Sexton was born in Brooklyn, MD, to Vincent D. Sr. and Mildred in December 1945. He attended St. Rose of Lima grade school, Mt. St. Joseph High School where he ran track, and the University of Baltimore with a degree in History. After servicing 2 years in the Army in Vietnam where he received a bronze star, he worked at the Social Security Administration in Woodlawn until his early retirement.

His cousins know him as Jock. The nickname was given to him by his father when Vince was a baby. Jock would grab the railing of the crib and bounce up and down. His dad said he looked like a Jockey and Jock stuck.

I think Jock's favorite person was his Uncle Charlie, his mom's brother. Many Sundays his family went over to East Baltimore to his grandmother's house for dinner and Uncle Charlie lived there. Uncle Charlie spent time with him, introduced him to coin collecting, gave him his first baseball glove, and other special gifts. Jock always talked so fondly of him.

Vince enjoyed attending and watching sporting events, reading especially history but also liked Dave Barry books, and beer. He cheered for the Orioles and the Baltimore Colts, and then the Ravens. For many years he had season tickets to the Navy football games and would enjoy attending with friends. He liked March Madness, Sports channels, old western movies especially John Wayne, the history channel, and a certain weather channel.

Even before Ancestry.com, Vince researched his families' records, pouring through handwritten entities in city and state offices. He enjoyed sharing details such as when our grandfather first appeared on a census or the town on the Eastern Shore where his grandmother lived.

Jock usually went out for lunch at some of his favorite hangouts or would meet with friends. He kept in touch with childhood friends and friends from SSA.

Before moving to Steedman Point, Jock had a house built in Riviera Beach just a block from our house. After our dad died, Jock would shovel out mom's car when it snowed.

As Jock's parents starting having health issues, he moved them in with him. That way he could take them to appointments, help them with meals, and take care of his mom after his dad died. Eventually his mom needed to go into a nursing home and he would visit her often.

Jock would gather with his Sexton cousins Jane, Dee and Ann. Jane would host family birthday parties and special events and for many years. Dee would have a party a few days after Christmas. Dee loved when many from the families would gather. Of course, they had more family and cousins.

After his parents died, and he was an orphan. Our family "the Cermak family" adopted him into our family and included him in many events such as Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas and Joan and Danny always invited him to their special gatherings.

In later years Jock became famous for his gifting of Rhebs candies. To be honest, after a few years of Christmas gifts of wine (he didn't select good wines) he brought Rhebs one year and gave us our choice. We all took the Rhebs. From that point on, Rhebs was the gift. For Christmas, birthday, a thank-you for shoveling snow off his driveway, many rides into Hopkins hospital, or for putting a new roof on his house —that was his thank you.

These last few years have been tough for Jock but especially these last two years. Like most people who are struggling with health issues, he fought it and sometimes with those who were trying to help him the most.

His cousin Joan, who lived nearby, and his lifetime childhood friend, Bob McGuire, have assisted him in so many ways with rides, picking up his mail, technology issues his cell phone, cable, and computer, and answering calls at various times day or night for help. They were always there for him. At times he could be demanding, and yet Joan and Bob stuck with him. Their continued patience and kindness were remarkable. We all want to thank Joan and Bob for their generosity and time.

Thank you to his kind neighbors from Steedman Point, for their caring, sharing, and supporting Vince and us. Special thanks to Fr. Jeremy Smith, St. John's Catholic Community, for the wonderful service and for praying with him before Vince died. Special thank you to the Army for the service at the gravesite.

Let's remember the good times, his big smile, his laugh, lunches, Rhebs, and the good conversations. May Jock rest in peace. Until we meet again,

Surviving are his cousins Joan Cermak Cade of Pasadena, Margaret Cermak Castagnola (Michael) of Crofton, Marie Cermak Truffer of Sykesville, James Cermak (Linda) of Boonsboro, and Karen Cermak Emge (Thomas) of Lebanon, PA and Jane Sexton DiJulio of Severna Park, Ann Sexton Whitney of Portsmouth, VA; and life-long best buddy, Bobby McGuire of Linthicum. He was predeceased in death by cousins Daniel J. Cermak, Jr and Dorothy "Dee" Sexton Blomquist.

Family and friends may visit on Tuesday June 4, 2024 from 10:00am - 11:00am with a service to start at 11:00am at the Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care,P.A 495 Ritchie Hwy Severna Park, MD 21146. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery immediately following.
