Valerie C. Howard, age 72, formerly of the community of Herald Harbor in Crownsville, MD, died on the morning of April 1st, 2016, following a several month battle with metastatic melanoma.
She was born on May 3rd, 1943 to Edward and Mildred (nee Paine) Clarke, and raised in Levittown and Seaford on Long Island, NY. Her earliest memory was of greeting her father, who served with the Army in the Pacific, when he returned home from World War II. Her sister Theresa remembers her as a loving big sister who especially enjoyed reading. Valerie graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead, NY, where she was active on the debate team, and from Misericordia College in Dallas, PA, with a B.A. in English. After college she worked as a teacher in Seaford, San Francisco, and the Bahamas for a year as a Catholic missionary; for General Mills in Minneapolis; and as a lobbyist for the Communications Workers of America in Washington, D.C.
In 1970, while living in D.C. she married Jeffrey Howard, originally of Bellingham, WA. They settled in Herald Harbor where they lived by the beautiful Severn River for over twenty years and raised three children. Valerie returned to teaching, primarily English at Glen Burnie High School, for about 20 years. During this time she completed her M.A. in English at the University of Maryland, College Park. After retirement she sold her house and lived near her children and grandchildren, first in Portland, OR and then in Ashburn, VA. She delighted in spending time with her grandkids.
Val was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Jeff. She is survived by her son Zachary Howard and wife Kerry of Fairfax, VA; daughter Kimberly Eaton and husband Kurt of Portland, OR; daughter Amanda Howard of Ashburn, VA; grandchildren Maddie, Xander, Severn, Violet and Tess; sister Theresa Yurgel and husband Denis of Seaford, NY; and nieces Mary, Laura and Sarah Yurgel of NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Thursday at 10:00am in the Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church 1070 Cecil Ave. Millersville, MD 21108. Interment in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Crownsville, MD.
