Thomas Reynolds Foard was bom in Alexandria, VA on September 24, 1933 to the late Norval Edward Foard and Susie Bollinger Foard of Alexandria, VA. He spent his childhood in Alexandria and attended George Washington High School graduating in 1951 having achieved many academic and musical honors.

He then attended Duke University on a Navy ROTC scholarship majoring in mechanical engineering, was a member of the Pi Kappa Epsilon or "Pika" fraternity, and graduated in 1955, beginning his military service as a pilot of S2F carrier-based aircraft and continued his military service until 1978 when he was honorably discharged holding the rank of Captain. He enjoyed a 50-year career with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, retiring in 2010 after a very distinguished career recognized for his leadership and organizational skills.

He married his high school sweet heart, Mary Jane Compe, in 1956, and in 1963 they moved to the community of North Shore in Pasadena, Maryland, where they had lived for 56 years, enjoying their waterfront setting on the Magothy River. They enjoyed the many community events and the wonderful neighbors of North Shore, while also enjoying being members of the Gibson Island Club for many years.

Tom had many interests and hobbies, such as playing the guitar and cello, boating and fishing, tennis and golf, but most of all he enjoyed his family. It was rare for Tom to miss a game or any other school event that involved his two sons or grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Tom is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Mary Jane, and his brother Donald E. Foard. Tom is survived by his two sons, Thomas D. Foard (wife Lynne Hudspeth Foard, grandson Andrew T. Foard and wife Nicole Shields Foard, great-grandson Mason Thomas Foard, and granddaughter Allison C. Foard) and John R. Foard (wife Mary Branch Foard, and granddaughters Lindsey Foard and Caroline Foard).

The Foard Family would like to extend tremendous gratitude to Lori Leabhart and her two sons (Chris and Taylor) for being wonderful caregivers to Tom and Mary Jane from 2015 until each of their passing.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the United Way at unitedway.org
