THEODORIC BOLLING ALFRIEND Jr.
JUNE 5, 1928, TO MAY 28, 2024
Ted went on his last sail today and we wish him fair winds. He was born in Norfolk Virginia and then moved to Baltimore at age 6 when his parents Theodoric and Jesse moved to Bolton Hill. He loved the area and spent some of his early days delivering newspapers and magazines on his bike.
He attended Calvert Hall School, then enrolled in the A course at Poly, which was downtown, and the John Hopkins Engineering School. After school, he and two friends started a small company in Annapolis, but soon decided it was not the right time for their ideas. He then went to work for the AAI Corp in Cockeysville, which later became Textron. He was there 37 years and made many friends he still talked with and saw.
While living in Bolton Hill, he met the love of his life, Mary Ames Bolton, and started their family. Their first home was in Dreams Landing in Annapolis, then with their children Virginia and Harry to Caves Rd in Green Spring Valley, Roland Park, and back to Linden Green in Bolton Hill. After retirement they moved to the North Shore community on the North side of the Magothy river. There they could be closer to Ted's boat and the sailing club he loved; Potapskut Sailing Association. During these years, Ted and his family sailed many types of boats and brought home over 125 trophies from the races he loved. He started small with the tiny wood boat his father carved for him to sail off of a beach in Norfolk, and later sailed a Penguin, a Thistle, a Knarr, a Triton; which he won the Nations one year, and many others up to his Pearson 39. One of his favorite stories was when he was about 21 years old and his younger Brother Hunter was 1 3, and they took the Thistle for a week cruising down the bay to Oxford. He had many boats he enjoyed working on and sailing over the years, but some of his best times were in his retirement years racing a boat called Ol' Yella in the Magothy River Wed. night races with his much beloved crew, Rich Fenton, Liz Hancock and Jim Gary. Later he would race with his second wife Leah on her San Juan 24 called Code Blue.
Ted was predeceased by his wife Mary Ames and his son Harry, but survived by his daughter Virginia Alfriend (Robin), grandson Brishen Kaszycki, granddaughter Lauren Dillinger, great grandsons Kilion Phaigh, Trae Ford, and great granddaughter Lirah Ford, and his nieces and nephews Emily Alfriend (Joe), Hunter Haines (Robert), Jesse Alfriend (Heidi), John Alfriend ( Amy), Sarah Ebert (David), and longtime friend and second wife Leah Duer Alfriend.
There will be a casual service to share memories for family and friends at Potapskut Sailing Association 283 Cove Rd, Pasadena, MD 21122 on June 2nd at 3:00 PM.
