Sylvia Meisenberg Zeizel
March 8, 1931-May 29, 2014

Born in Brooklyn N.Y., Sylvia married at 19 and began a 35 year career teaching elementary school in New York City public schools, pausing a while to raise a family. A 1951 graduate of Brooklyn College, she earned masters degrees in both education and the liberal arts. In 1990, she was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship to study methods to improve Shakespeare education to primary school students. Generations of her multi-ethnic students were able to learn from Sylvia what makes Shakespeare so great. She was a lifelong devotee of the arts and conducted public tours at the Metropolitan Opera House and Lincoln Center in New York. She kept a lifelong commitment to self improvement, seeking insight from the Great Books and wherever else enlightenment was available. In her final years she was very active with the Arundel House of Hope's Winter Relief program, and donated numerous tents for the clients' use when winter shelter ended. In the last ten years of her life, she made many friends at the Arnold Senior Center who became very dear to her.

Sylvia's most impressive accomplishment was her refusal to wear the mantle of victimhood under the strain of her life's major adversities, leaving a lasting lesson for those who loved and admired her. Above all, Sylvia offered an unconstrained and unqualified bounty of love and support for her family always finding in them the better angels of their nature. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Sheldon her son, Jay and her sister, Marilyn. She will be missed by her two children, two daughters-in-law, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Internment will take place in New York. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Sylvia Meisenberg Adult Literacy Program at the Arundel House of Hope or the Shakespeare Education Fund both care of the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County , 914 Bay Ridge Road, Suite 220, Annapolis MD 21403, or the Arnold Senior Center, 44 Church Road, Arnold MD 21012.
