Dr. Stephen H. Arnold passed away on February 17, 2014 at the age of 71. He died peacefully at his home due to complications of pancreatic cancer.
Stephen was born in 1942 in Long Beach, California to Emery and Melba Arnold and was raised in Aztec, New Mexico. He received his bachelor's degree from Adams State University, and served several years in Liberia, West Africa, as a member of the Peace Corps. After returning to the US, he joined the Urban Teacher Corps and began his career as a teacher in Washington, D.C. He went on to earn a master's degree in teaching from Georgetown University and his doctorate in education from the University of Maryland College Park, in 1985. He taught high school English and history for over 40 years before retiring from the Prince George's County public school system.
Stephen was married to and is survived by Diane LeRoux Arnold, with whom he had four children. He is survived by daughter Darcie Bowers, future son-in-law Brian Meehan, and grandchildren Michael, Brandon, Savannah, as well as a grandson expected in May. He is also survived by his sons Neil, Matthew, and Ryan Arnold. Ryan is married to Jennifer Arnold and they have three sons, Emery, Brayden, and Colin. Stephen's brothers Chris and Pat, as well as sister Annette, all reside in New Mexico and he has several nieces, nephews, and relatives throughout the country.
Stephen was a passionate teacher and positively influenced the lives of his many students through the years. He enjoyed writing, discussing and researching politics and history, literature, gardening, and traveling. He had a great sense of humor and brought happiness and support to his family and many friends.
