Sonja J MacLean, 74, passed away peacefully at home on July 11, 2017 surrounded by her family.  Sonja was known for her generous spirit, love of family and friends, welcoming arms, strong will and her steadfast conservative political views. She was born in Peoria, Illinois on December 26, 1942 to the late Rex and Pauline Miller. She attended Normal Community High School in Normal, IL. She worked for State Farm Insurance Company in Normal Illinois before moving to Chicago to work for Evanston Hospital. While in Chicago she met the late Duncan MacLean and they married. Sonja and Duncan moved to Severna Park, Maryland in 1976 where they raised their 3 daughters, Carolyn, Cathy and Missy. Sonja was an avid golfer and a member of Chartwell Golf & Country Club, where she won the 18 hole ladies championship 2 times. She was instrumental in starting the Junior Golf Program at Chartwell. She was a homemaker and really enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She and her husband spent many weekends sailing the Chesapeake Bay. In 1997 Sonja and her husband retired to Scottsdale, Arizona. To beat the summer heat in Arizona, Sonja retreated to the mountains of Overgaard, AZ where she continued to play golf and take long ATV rides exploring the beauty of the forest. In 2014 she moved back to Severna Park, Maryland to be closer to two of her daughters and her grandchildren.

She is survived by her brother Ronald Miller, daughter Carolyn Chew (Steve), daughter Catherine Gloman (Charles), daughter Missy MacLean, her five grandchildren Evyn, Camryn, Caitlyn, Carson, and Christian, and her great-granddaughter Bella.

Sonja was a wonderful wife, an amazing mom and a great friend to all who knew her; she will be greatly missed. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday September 9, 2017 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 40 Hatton Drive in Severna Park, MD.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sonja's name to The First Tee; a program started as a way to bring an affordable junior golf program to communities that did not have them. Go to thefirsttee.org to donate.
