Dr. Sherman Samuel Robinson, 79, of Edgewater, MD passed away on Monday, December 5, 2011 at his home in Edgewater following a courageous battle with cancer.


Sherman was born on August 23, 1932 in Pittsfield, MA to Ann and Manuel Robinson and was raised on Staten Island, New York. He attended Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Biology and Chemistry and then attended Georgetown University Medical School, graduating in 1957 with the degree of Medical Doctor (MD).


He was commissioned an officer in the US Army in 1956 and served in the medical corps. He completed his pediatric residency at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and was chief of pediatrics at the Kimbrough Army Hospital in Fort Meade. Sherman was honorably discharged in 1962 at the rank of Captain


In 1956, Sherman married Joan McCarron, whom he had met while at Georgetown University. They recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. In 1962 the couple moved to Severna Park where Sherman started his pediatric practice. He continued to serve generations of children there until retiring in 2004. Along with several other pediatricians, he founded Severna Park Pediatric Associates as well as the Chesapeake Sports Medicine Center in Severna Park.


Throughout his career, Dr. Robinson's outstanding dedication to the field of medicine was recognized with election to several leadership positions, and Sherman served as president of the medical staff of the Anne Arundel Medical Center, president of the Anne Arundel County Medical Society, and chief of pediatrics at the North Arundel Hospital. He also served as Associate Professor of Pediatric Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical School and was active with the Med Chi of Maryland. Sherman was a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American College of Sports Medicine.



Sherman's dedication to medicine frequently united with his love of sports throughout his lifelong service to the community.  Serving as the the athletics physician for Severna Park High School for over 40 years, Sherman could be found every fall weekend on the football sideline for both home and away games. He was a major contributor to the effort to secure outdoor stadium lighting for the school in the 1970s. The school's annual scholar-athlete award is named in his honor, and he was an inductee into the Severna Park High School Athletics Inaugural Hall of Fame in 2003.  Additionally,Sherman served on the board of the Greater Severna Park Athletic Association-Green Hornets for several years and was the organization's secretary and vice-president. He also served on the boards for the Anne Arundel County Red Cross and the American Cancer Society.


A dedicated Redskin fan, he was a season ticket holder for many years and enjoyed the ultimate trip to the Super Bowl to see his team win in 1992.


An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Chartwell Golf and Country Club, where he also served as the vice-president and held various board positions. Sherman also served several terms and was a current member of the Board of Trustees of his alma mater, Davis and Elkins College.


Sherman was beloved by his family, many friends, and all who knew him. He enjoyed spending time with his family, summers at Ocean City and at numerous events watching his 9 grandchildren,who lovingly referred to him as "Papa Doc". He touched the lives of so many people, and is remembered not only for his professional expertise as "Dr. Robinson" but also for the incredible love, generosity, and kindness with which he treated everyone he encountered. The great oupouring of love shown since his diagnosis this fall was a testimony to what he meant to so many and to the numerous lives he touched.


He is survived by his wife, Joan Robinson of Edgewater; his daughter, Deborah L. Minneman (Thomas) of Minneapolis, MN; his son, Michael W. Robinson, Sr. (Shannon) of Reisterstown, MD; his daughter, Christina E. Davis of Minneapolis, MN; his sister,
Natalie Krauss of Oneonta, NY; as well as his grandchildren, Jacqueline, Michael, and Elizabeth Minneman, Tristan, Alexandra, Michael, Jr., Jordan and Mackenzie Robinson  and Elizabeth Davis.


A visitation will be held at the Barranco & Sons Funeral Home located at 495 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park on Friday, December 9, 2011 from 2-4pm and 7-9 pm.   A Mass of The Resurrection will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 12 p.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church located at 826 West Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD.  The interment will immediately follow at Our Lady of The Fields church cemetery in Millersville, MD.  Contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake.
