It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Benjamin Thomas Kirwan, Jr., a retired police Sergeant of the Anne Arundel County Police Department, who passed away on May 9, 2025, at the age of 77.

Ben was born on April 20, 1948, in Easton, MD. He later moved to Anne Arundel County and called Glen Burnie home for more than 40 years. He dedicated all of his adult life to serving the community as a police officer, rising to the rank of Sergeant during his 38 year career with the department.

Ben spent much of his career supervising and mentoring patrol officers in the Eastern District. He found helping the public as well as his fellow officers one of the most rewarding parts of his career. He was a respected and well liked member of the force and counted many colleagues as his friends. The Eastern District Police Community Relations Council honored Sgt. Kirwan's dedication by naming him Sergeant of the Year.

During his free time Ben enjoyed traveling, sports, and spending time with his family. He was an avid bowler and a regular in a Glen Burnie bowling league. Ben also enjoyed spending time with friends and was particularly fond of his annual golf trips to Myrtle Beach. He cherished spending time with his wife and their trips together to Ocean City and Las Vegas, going on various cruises, and their getaways to casinos. Ben, together with his wife, enjoyed hosting friends for regular card games and family for holiday reunions. Ben was a big fan of Baltimore sports, particularly the Ravens and Orioles, and enjoyed watching games with his son and daughter.

In addition to his beloved wife of 27 years, Debra Kirwan (nee Wright), survivors include: two loving children Benjamin Thomas Kirwan III and Heather Huppmann (nee Mayfield) & husband Thomas Huppmann; his cherished grandsons, Maxwell Mayfield, Brian Huppmann, and Christopher Huppmann; Edwardine Kirwan, mother of his children and great friend. He was predeceased by his daughter, Debra Rigdon (nee Kirwan).

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of the Chesapeake.

Ben's humor, wit, and unwavering love for his family will forever be cherished. He leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he served. May he rest in peace.
