Ryder C. Ray, 85, a resident of Severna Park for 25 years and previously of Bethesda and Potomac, died of heart failure Dec. 17 at his home.

Born Dec. 6, 1920, in Washington, D.C., Mr. Ray attended the Capitol Page School while overseer of pages for the House of Representatives and graduated from St. John's College High School in 1938. He attended the University of Texas at Austin.

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, he entered the Army Air Corps and became a first lieutenant in the 14th Air Force, 308th Bomb Group, piloting B24 Liberators in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations.

After leaving the service, he inherited from his uncle the F.I. Ray Excavating Co. in Bethesda, which he operated until 1968. Subsequently, he joined the Montgomery County Department of Community and Economic Development as project coordinator for the Emory Grove Urban Renewal Project. He later worked for the Maryland Department of Economic and Community Development as a housing rehabilitation field coordinator.

After retiring in 1985, he volunteered with the Auxiliary of Anne Arundel Medical Center.

While living in Montgomery County, he was active in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase community. He was past president of the BCC Rotary Club and the Community Service Council of Bethesda-Chevy Chase, a board member of Suburban Hospital and a member of the Civil Defense Advisory Committee to the Montgomery County Council.

In 1955 he received the annual citizenship award from the BCC Civitan Club. He helped to establish youth Interact Clubs of the Rotary, and sponsored and played Santa Claus for the Montgomery County School Patrol Program.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara G. Ray; three children, Marguerite A. Bream of Dana Point, Calif., Roland C. Ray of Germantown and Ryder C. Ray Jr. of Berlin in Worcester County; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Online condolences may be made at www.barrancofuneralhome.com.
