Ruth M. Stelzer of Stevensville, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home Feb. 17, 2016, at the grand age of 90.
Born in Neuekrug/Hahausen, Germany on Feb. 3, 1926, she was the daughter of Rudolph & Otelia Kassebaum. Ruth met & married Frederick Stelzer in Germany in 1946, two daughters were later born in Germany, and in 1958 the Stelzer family moved to Chicago, Illinois, thanks to Frederick's job with the Volkswagen Auto Co. The family later moved to Baltimore and lived in several locations around the City, in 1966 moved to Glen Burnie, and in 1979 to Stevensville, Maryland. Her Husband Frederick was employed with Volkswagen until his death in Aug. 1979. Ruth and the children frequently traveled back and forth to Germany. In later years she would visit Germany solo, with great excitement, sightseeing, spending time with relatives and her school mates, and enjoying flights over the Atlantic Ocean.
Ruth was not proficient in English at first, but studied and was determined to master the language, although she never lost her German accent, which everyone enjoyed. Ruth was a Nanny for 35 years, retiring at age 75. She baked a great apple strudel, crocheted at least 20 throws, hooked handmade rugs, passed around her chicken soup and nurtured her family , friends, children, flower gardens, and all doggies. You could always find dog treats in all of her coat pockets. She was a strong, determined and creative woman.
Ruth is survived by daughters Cornelia (Barbara) Stelzer-Herfel (Husband Donald Herfel) Stevensville, MD, and Claudia Stelzer-Baker (Husband Robert Baker) of Bradenton, Florida; Nephews Hartmut Kassebaum (Wife Christine) (Children Joschka, Jana & Florian Kobes) and Dietrich Kassebaum (Wife Flores) (Daughter Lena) all residing in Germany; and Maike Arcieri-Eiben, Glen Burnie, a dear friend for 45 years. Ruth is predeceased by her brother Bruno Kassebaum (1971) and (Wife Brunhilde Weissensee 1995).
Life celebration at a later date.
