Ruth Guthrie, resident of Genesis Health Care of Severna Park, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, 1 October 2014. She was 96.
Ruth had lived in Severna Park for the past 15 years. Earlier, she made her home in Wilmington, DE, for nearly 50 years. West Grove, PA, was her beloved childhood home.
Throughout her abundant life, Ruth enjoyed her church community, her family, and many loving friends. An ardent Christian, she was an active member and deacon of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Wilmington. She endeared others with her natural spunk, her love of fun, and her abiding faith. She also shared her gift of selfless caring for those she encountered, exemplifying a life well lived.
Ruth was born in Philadelphia, PA, in 1918 and was the sister of William Carlile. Before the age of two, she went to live with her paternal grandmother in West Grove, PA, following the sudden death of her father to influenza. She was married to Harold Guthrie of Oxford, PA, in 1942 until his death in 1990. She is also predeceased by her brother William.
Ruth is survived by her three children: Janet Guthrie of Annapolis, Joyce Stafford (and husband Joseph) of Severna Park, and Robert Guthrie of Carversville, PA. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Bret Gross (and wife Cassie) and Gregory Gross (and wife Lori) of Senoia, GA; Michelle McGregor (and husband Robert) of Terra Alta, WVA; Shannon McKenzie (and husband Brad) of Duxbury, MA; Mark Stafford of Annapolis; Adam Guthrie of New Hope, PA, Drew Guthrie (and wife Jennifer) of Gulf Shores, AL; Matt Guthrie (and wife Jennifer) of Houston, TX; and Anna Guthrie of Glenside, PA.
In addition, she is survived by eight great grandchildren: Chandley, Lauren, Ella, and Grant McKenzie; Peyton, Wade and Hudson Gross; and Lillian Guthrie.
A service will be held Monday, 6 October 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Kemblesville United Methodist Church in Kemblesville, PA, following a viewing, with interment at New London cemetery.
