Russell Fritz of Severna Park, Md., died on June 27, 2011, after bravely battling cancer for two years.
Russ was born on March 3, 1940, and grew up in Arbutus, Md. A 1957 graduate of Catonsville High School, he attended the University of Maryland, College Park, earning a degree in accounting. Russ passed the CPA exam, but put his career on hold when he was drafted. He joined the U.S. Navy and served his country aboard the USS Dahlgren.
Following an honorable discharge, Russ went to work at McCormick Company at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, where he met and married Carol, whom he was happily married to for 45 years. He worked for several other companies before retiring — only to return to the workforce by joining the team at LaFarge Corporation. He worked there for five years and described it as the "best work experience" of his life.
Russ was an avid softball player and played in several senior softball leagues for over 15 years. Some of his happiest times occurred on a sunny day on the diamond. Born and raised in Baltimore, Russ was a die-hard Orioles and Ravens fan and spent many hours rooting for his teams. He also loved the ocean, good food and, most of all, his family. He is fondly remembered by family and friends for his ready wit and sense of humor, and for being a truly good human being – never having a bad word to say about anyone and a possessing the unique quality of being able to see the good in everyone.
Russ is survived by his wife, Carol; one daughter, Karen Broughton, and husband Ned Broughton of Elkridge, Md.; one son, Wayne Fritz of GlenBurnie, Md.; four adored grandchildren: Haley Jimenez, Justin Jimenez, Kendall Broughton and Reagan Fritz; and one brother, Edward Fritz, and wife Miriam Fritz of Ocean City, Md. He is preceded into death by his parents, Milton and Marguerite Fritz, and his beloved daughter, Allison Jimenez.
