Rosemarie DeVal was born on August 26, 1927 in Turtle Creek, PA, the daughter and only child of Earnest and Marie McCusker.  Several years later the family moved to Trafford PA, and purchased a house built by Westinghouse for working families in the small western Pennsylvania town.  Her father, Earnest, worked on the railroad while her mother, Marie, was a school teacher in the local public school system.  Rosemarie grew up during the post-depression era, and learned the value of hard work and managing family resources to make ends meet.  It was in high school that she met her late husband John DeVal at a local high school dance, and this chance meeting eventually led to a life-long commitment.

After high school, she pursued a teaching degree at Slippery Rock State College in Butler County PA. There she played Field Hockey, and pursued and earned a Bachelor's Degree in health education graduating in 1949. After college she began a brief teaching career, and she soon married John DeVal of Level Green, PA.  Shortly after marriage, the young couple bought property in Mentor, OH and built their first home.  She continued with her life as a homemaker, mother, and a substitute teacher when needed.

In 1966, Rosemarie and her family moved to Severna Park, MD. There she raised her two children, Maureen and Brian, and became active in her community at the local country club and charitable organizations. She was very creative and a talented seamstress. She used these gifts to give back to the community by knitting hats for newborns at Anne Arundel Medical Center.  Her greatest role besides being a mother was as caregiver for 25 years to her husband, John, who became disabled. She was devoted to her husband and family, and remained active herself well into her later years, playing golf, tennis, and swimming for exercise and enjoyment.

Rosemarie knew how to overcome adversity.  She was a breast cancer survivor of 47 years, battled heart disease, and eventually congestive heart failure.  She had a TIA in 2013, recovered, but eventually developed Alzheimer's disease, and faced that challenge with dignity and determination until her passing.  She will continue to be a role model to her children and four grandchildren of how to face adversity with tenacity and persistence.

She is truly missed, but her legacy will never be forgotten!
