Romaine Shumaker Grubb of Sunrise Assisted Living in Severna Park, Maryland passed away Thursday, October 24, 2013. The daughter of the late John and Cordelia (Hebel) Shumaker, she was born on January 28, 1925 in Liverpool, Pennsylvania.
Romaine was formerly married to the late Dr. Robert Grubb of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania where she lived and raised her four children, Richard, Susan, Barbara and John. In 1986 she moved to Annapolis and later to Severna Park where she spent her last years.
Romaine attended high school in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and held a passion for music and singing. In the mid 1940s she was a first runner-up in the Miss Pennsylvania (Miss America) Pageant where she was able to showcase her talent, singing the torch song "You Go to My Head." She later pursued a singing career in the era of the big bands, performing at venues in Ocean City, Maryland, and Philadelphia.
In the years during her marriage to Dr. Grubb, she was extremely active in the Snyder County Pennsylvania Republican Party and loved talking politics with friend or foe. Her interests were diverse to be sure, and her musical talent was not her only creative endeavor. Romaine loved cooking and had a keen eye for antiques and decorating. All who knew her would marvel at her talent for turning the mundane into something special.
After moving to the Annapolis area, she followed her passion for music and resurrected a singing hobby, performing around the area with other local musicians. Romaine carried her love for music throughout her life, but her true loves were her children. She was a devoted mother and encouraged her children to be unique; she would often say, "Be a leader, not a follower." Romaine's greatest pleasure was cooking for and entertaining her children and grandchildren. Making sure her family was happy was her top priority.
Surviving are her children and their spouses, Susan and son-in-law Christopher Jackson, Barbara and son-in-law Charles (Rick) Obrecht, John and daughter-in-law Janet Grubb, and daughter-in-law Barbara (Bobbie) Grubb, in addition to nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings John Shumaker, Hazel Hetrick, and Nancy Hughes.
Preceding her in death were her oldest son Richard, who died in 2011, her sisters, Caroline and Susan, and her mother and father.
A service celebrating the life of Romaine S. Grubb will be held at 11 a.m. at Seebold's Funeral Home in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania on Friday, November 1, 2013. An hour of visitation will be held at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Romaine's memory to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org/donate and or the Hospice of the Chesapeake.
