Severna Park - Robert (Bob) Maurice Schaller, Sr., 91, of Severna Park, MD, died peacefully Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at the Sunrise Senior Living Center after complications from several strokes. The former U.S.F. & G. executive was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1920. Bob was the son of the late Maurice C. and Eleanor T. Schaller. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances McConnell Schaller in 1976.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie W. Schaller, his only sister, Lenore Dudgeon (husband Willard) of Las Cruces, NM. five children: Eileen Schaller of Las Cruces, NM, Robert M. Schaller, Jr. (wife Brenda) of Bishopville, MD, Mary Schaller McConnell of Berlin, Maryland, Elizabeth Ann Schaller of Ocean City, MD and Karen S. Connolly (husband Tom) of Ocean City, MD five step-children: Pamela Ernst (husband Peter) of N. Hollywood, CA, Deborah Appleyard (husband Bob) of Acton, ME, Jeffrey Wood (wife Diana) of Port Republic, MD, Wendell Jones (wife Lynn) of Arnold, MD and Susan Snyder of Ocala, FL, two nieces, one great niece and one great nephew, sixteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Bob will be remembered fondly for his many humorous stories, jokes, wit and wisdom. He and Marge were also very active at the Severna Park Senior Center where Bob was involved in exercise and dancing programs.
Bob was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, PA where he attended public schools. He attended University of Pennsylvania, and graduated from the Wharton School of Business. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942. After attending Officer Training School, he was sent to Harvard and MIT for further military training. He served during World War II from 1942 to 1946 in the South Pacific, the Philippines and China. He was honorably discharged as a Captain.
Bob began his career with U.S.F. & G. in Scranton, PA as a claims adjuster. In 1958, he was promoted to the home office in Baltimore, MD. In 1964, Bob received his Law Degree from University of Baltimore and was a Member of the Maryland Bar Association. Bob went on to become Senior Vice President of Claims for U.S.F. & G. and was a Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter. Bob retired from U.S.F & G. in 1986.
In his retirement, Bob enjoyed snow skiing, traveling, boating, fishing, biking, dancing, woodworking and gardening. He also enjoyed spending time in Ocean City, MD at his summer home which he and his wife, Frances, built in 1962. Bob always said he had no idea how he ever had time to work.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 10:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Severna Park, MD. A private service will be held at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, MD.
