Robert Rice
Robert Charles "Bob" Rice, 69, of Arnold, died of complications following transplant surgery June 21 at the University of Maryland Pulmonary Transplant Intensive Care Unit after a year-long illness. A full story ran in yesterday's edition of The Capital.
Mr. Rice was born Sept. 23, 1938, in Nevenville, Iowa, and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and a doctoral degree from Iowa State University.
A former superintendent of Anne Arundel County schools, he was most recently employed as a special assistant to the superintendent for the District of Columbia Public Schools. He was responsible for desegregation while superintendent of St. Charles Parish Public Schools in Louisiana.
Mr. Rice also worked for the Maryland State Department of Education and the Maryland State Board of Education.
He founded the St. Charles Parish Rotary International, and served as commissioner of the Maryland State Ethics Commission.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and won the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo with the catch of a 436-pound blue marlin.
Survivors include his wife of over 18 years, Betsy R. Rice; his former wife, Susannah L. Rice of Queen Anne; one son, Dr. Robert Todd Rice of Queen Anne; one daughter, Stephanie Rice Weaver of Greensboro, N.C.; one stepson, Mark Fleming of Arnold; one stepdaughter, Rachael Fleming of Arnold; two brothers, Richard Rice of Johnston, Iowa, and Ronald Rice of Des Moines, Iowa; and six grandchildren.
Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 1601 Pleasant Plains Road.
