Robert Lincoln Rau, 86, of Severna Park, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 from complications of skin cancer.

Born March 2, 1932 in Somers Point, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Lincoln and Mary Rau. Bob is survived by his wife Grace Ann Rau of Severna Park, sister Judy Dunlop and husband Larry of Worcester, MA, daughters Elizabeth Rau Benner and husband Jay of Boston, MA, Anne Rau Digges and husband Bill of Purcellville, VA, stepchildren; Sgt Michael S. Schenck, USMC and wife Becky of Edgewater, MD, Stacy Schenck Allen of North Beach, MD, and W. Christopher Schenck and wife Theresa of Severna Park, MD. Bob's grandchildren include LT Alexandra Benner, USN, LTJG Tyler Benner, USN, ENS Erin Benner, USN, Benjamin Digges, Jacob Digges, Alison Digges Kusar, Emily Digges Rustick, Rachel Digges, Clarissa Digges, William Digges, Lacey Schenck, Jesse Allen, Ian Allen, Catherine Allen, J. Brady Allen, Tiffany Strawbridge, and Leah Schenck. Great grandchildren include Ian Digges, Lincoln Digges, and Sophia Digges. Bob is preceded in death by his first wife Evelyn, son-in-law Robert Allen, and granddaughter Christina Lynn Schenck.

MAJ Robert Rau, United States Marine Corps (retired) was Professor Emeritus at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. He earned his PhD from the University of Michigan and served as Political Science Department Chair at the Naval Academy for many years. Bob loved boating and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay. He loved to swim — he grew up on the Jersey shore and served as an Ocean City, NJ lifeguard. Bob was a longtime resident of the Annapolis Roads community in Annapolis, MD, and served as president of the Annapolis Roads Property Owners Association (ARPOA). Bob was an avid reader and traveler, spending a great deal of time in Japan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Hawaii, and even teaching for a year at the Royal Military Academy in Canberra, Australia as a Fulbright Scholar. He was also a huge Navy sports fan, and was very proud of his longtime role as academic advisor to the USNA Lacrosse Team.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at 2pm in The United States Naval Academy Chapel, in Annapolis, MD. A reception will be held at The United States Naval Academy Officer's Club following the service. Interment will take place in The United States Naval Academy Columbarium. Semper fi.
