Robert Linthicum

Robert C. Linthicum, 87, a resident of Severna Park since 1948, died of natural causes March 29 at his home after a lengthy illness.

Born June 20, 1917, in Baltimore, Mr. Linthicum was reared in Linthicum Heights and graduated in 1939 from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in civil engineering.

He worked for 34 years with the Army Corps of >Engineers, retiring as the chief of the Air Force Branch, Construction Division, Directorate of Military Construction, in Washington, D.C.

Early in his career with the Corps, he represented the Chief of Engineers at Operation Sandstone in 1948 at the Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands where he observed and reported on the structural impacts of the explosions of atomic bombs 6, 7 and 8.

Before moving to the Office of the Chief of Engineers in Washington, he was assigned to the Baltimore District. There he was project manager for numerous construction projects, most notably the design of the National Security Agency Building at Fort George G. Meade.

Following retirement in 1974, Mr. Linthicum worked for Heery and Heery Architects of Atlanta, opening and managing its Washington, D.C., office. He later worked for Trident Engineering in Annapolis.

Mr. Linthicum also designed numerous homes, additions to homes and several commercial facilities in the Round Bay, Linstead, Severna Park and Glen Burnie areas.

He recently received his 60-year pin from the Glen Burnie Masonic Lodge where he served as Master in 1955. He was an avid watercolor artist and enjoyed boating, travel, golf and tennis. He was a member of the Baltimore Shrine, Annapolis Yacht Club and the Johns Hopkins Club and served on numerous committees with the Johns Hopkins Engineering Alumni Association.

His wife, Edna Cartwright Linthicum, a county educator and principal, died Dec. 24, 2004. The couple was married Aug. 30, 1941.

Surviving are two sons, Charles H. Linthicum of Severna Park and Robert C. Linthicum Jr. of Fredericksburg, Va.; one sister, Rebecca Meseke of Linthicum Heights; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park. Burial will be in Glen Haven Cemetery in Glen Burnie.
