Robert John LaPorte, 87, a resident of Severna Park, died on September 13th at home due to pancreatic cancer after a brief illness.
He was born March 19, 1921 in Schenectady, NY and raised in Philadelphia, PA. In the late 1950's he came to Severna Park.
Mr. LaPorte served in the United States Air Force during WWII, and graduated in 1947 from Drexel University. He retired in 1989 from W.R. Grace, Davison Chemical Division, where he had worked as a Chemical Engineer. In the same year, he received his M.A. in Education from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
He was a member and past Commander of the Annapolis Sail & Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadron. He enjoyed photography, gardening, opera, celestial navigation, and travel. He was very active with the Jug Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Christine Nightingale, who died in 1966.
Survivors include his wife Lillian M. (nee Martin) of 39 years; four daughters, Linda Duvall of Herndon, VA, Marie Tuthill of San Diego, CA, Marty Chambliss of Los Angeles, CA, and Ginni Watson of Pasadena, MD; one son, Bruce Chambliss of Stevensville, MD; one brother, Dick LaPorte of Northern VA; twelve grandchildren,
five great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, September 26, 2008 from 6-8 p.m. at the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at St. Martin's in-the-Field Episcopal Church, 375 Benfield Road in Severna Park.
Interment in the church memorial garden will follow immediately after the service.
