Robert Edward Hallman – Born 12-17-1927
Bob, a longtime resident of Severna Park, MD, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday evening, the 17th, surrounded by family and friends.
He will be remembered for his sharp mind and keen sense of humor – both of which were always on display at two favorite events hosted annually; the "Ghetto Open" golf tournament and "Tube Steak" party. He was an avid boater, and spent much of his leisure time on and around the Magothy River. He was an enthusiastic and not so good golfer.
Born in Newark, NJ, his family moved to the Irvington area of west Baltimore and eventually settled in Catonsville where he spent the better part of his youth. He attended the McDonogh School where he was co-captain of the cavalry, co-captain of the varsity wrestling team, and captain of the varsity baseball team. He was a two time Maryland Scholastic Association wrestling champion, voted as outstanding wrestler of the tournament in his senior year.
After graduation in 1946 he joined the United States Marine Corp and was a member of the Navy / Marine Corp wrestling team. He wrestled into the final round of the United States Olympic Trials held in Ames, Iowa in 1948.
Following his service in the military, he attended Babson College near Boston, MA, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelors of Science degree.
After college, he went to work at Columbia Paper Products in Baltimore, which was owned by his father, Harold Hallman. Shorty after his father's death in 1965, he was employed as the plant manager of a facility owned by Interpac Spencer in Chicago, IL In 1973, he moved to Appleton, WI where he was the Vice-President of the converting division of Thilmany Paper Co. In 1974 he moved back to Maryland, accepting the position of President of C.E. Stevens Packaging in Baltimore, purchasing the business in 1975. In 1990 he moved the company to Hagerstown, MD, and after ten more years of successful development, sold the business to Amcor Flexibles in 2000. He was retired thereafter.
He is survived by his second wife of 38 years, Mildred Hallman, his son, Mark Hallman, his daughters Kathy Beckman and Lee Windham and husband Weir. He is also survived by stepchildren Sue Otis and husband Dan; David Bradley and his wife, Lynda, as well as, his sister, Adelle Stoltey. He has 6 grandchildren - Shane and Kelsey Beckman, Brad, Cory and Nick Otis, and Dylan Bradley.
Family and friends may visit on Sunday, March 22, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Gov. Ritchie Highway in Severna Park. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 23, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, 611 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd., Severna Park, MD 21146.
