Robert (Bob) A. Ellsworth, 76, of Arnold, MD passed away suddenly of natural causes on December 31, 2020. He spent his last evening surrounded by his loving family and toasting to the new year. Robert was born in 1944 in Syracuse, NY and spent his youth in Lynbrook, NY with his mother Amy Finkeldey Ellsworth, Susan Ellsworth Rappel, and John C. Ellsworth. Robert graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Landscape Architecture where he joined ROTC training. He was then stationed in Germany with the US Army Corps of Engineers where he met Gloria. They were married in her hometown in northern Spain and moved to Annapolis shortly thereafter. They often returned to Spain to visit family along with their daughters, Nina and Amy. Robert later earned his Masters Degree in Urban Design from Catholic University. Robert worked for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources as a park planner developing parks across the state for 25 years. He left his footprint in many state parks across Maryland where he planned and designed facilities that allow access to Maryland's natural resources. He also designed marinas and boat ramps along Maryland's waterways. His projects include Point Lookout, Sandy Point State Park and Marina, Sommer's Cove Marina, and boat ramps in Elk Neck and Deep Creek Lake, among many others. After DNR he worked for the State Department as a contracting officer for embassy construction projects, a position that took him to embassies around the world. Robert loved the misty coast and mountains of northern Spain as much as he loved the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay. He was an avid metal detectorist and loved researching historic sites throughout Maryland. He also loved sailing the Magothy River with Gloria in their catboat, Merendero. Each summer he enjoyed a week with his family at Bethany Beach, taking in the sun and sand with his three granddaughters Beatrice, Anna, and Sarah, who loved him dearly and affectionately call him Yayo. His family will truly miss his kindness, generosity, compassion, and sense of humor. To honor Robert's affinity for Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay, donations may be made in his memory to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation at www.CBF.org/tribute Robert's family is extremely grateful for all the love and support from friends and family who have expressed their condolences and affection for our beloved father, grandfather, husband, father-in-law, brother, uncle, and friend over the past few weeks. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
