Robert Cikk, age 92 passed away peacefully on March 5, 2012. He was Born August 19, 1919 in Czechoslovakia.
He left his hometown in September of 1938, at the age of 18 to Romania to flee from the Nazi invasion. He traveled to Palestine in 1939 where he lived on a Kabbutz for a short while, then moved to Haifa to work on an oil refinery. In September of 1939 he joined the British Army who sent him to Tobruck in North Africa. During the war his infantry fought in Cairo, Syria, and El Amamein in Egypt and joined the 8th army under General Montgomery to sweep back the defeated Germans across North Africa. He returned to England for a year and then went with the Czech unit of the British Army through France, Belgium, Germany and back to Czechoslovakia. His unit was attached in 1945 to General Patton's 3rd American Army, working as liaison tracing missing persons of relatives who were coming from different concentration camps. At the end of 1945 he was sent to Nuremburg where he performed guard duty during the trials. He left military service in 1946. He returned to England and worked as a tailor. He immigrated to the United States in 1959 with his wife, Ella and his Daughter Sandra. He lived in Washington DC and then Hyattsville, Maryland.
He owned several cleaning stores and continued tailoring until he left Maryland. When his wife Ella died he moved to Delray Beach, Florida. While in Florida he married Muncie Paul. He returned to Maryland in May 2009, living at Atria Assisted Living for almost a year and then spent the last year and a half at the Crofton Convalescent Center.
He is survived by his daughters, Sandra Schachter, who lives in Severna Park and Anne Mediony who lives in Israel. He has three grandchildren, Ellie Schachter, Elan and Avital Mediony.
A Graveside Service and interment will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Adelphi, MD at 11:00 am. Arrangements made by Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home.
