Rinaldo Massimino

Rinaldo B. Massimino, 73, musical director, teacher and resident of Severna Park, died of complications from a heart attack and stroke April 25 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mr. Massimino was born Dec. 22, 1930, in Leechburg, Pa., where he graduated from Leechburg High School. He received a bachelor of science degree in music education from Indiana State Teachers College and a master's degree in music from Peabody Institute in 1963.

He served in the Army during the Korean War. He played the trombone with the Second Army Band at Fort Meade and directed the award-winning Second Army Male Chorus, which appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1958.

Previously he taught instrumental music in Conneaut Lake, Pa. Afterwards he taught both instrumental and vocal music in Anne Arundel County public schools for 29 years before retiring. Subsequently he directed Bay Winds Band and served as adjudicator and conductor at various county and state musical festivals.

A prolific composer, he wrote both choral and instrumental music and performed as a jazz musician in the Maryland and Washington, D.C., area for many years. He was director and organist at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Severna Park for 19 years and at St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church in Annapolis.

He enjoyed abstract painting.

He was married to the former Agnes Fedorko for more than 50 years.

Also surviving are his four sons, Enrico Massimino of Shepherdstown, W.Va., Andrew Massimino of Annapolis, Anthony Massimino of Orange, Conn., and Vincent Massimino of Pearl, Miss.; four daughters, Micaela Leavenworth of Sacramento, Calif., Catherine Schetky of Groton, Mass., Juliana Jones of Springfield, Va., and Gina Massimino of Brooklyn Park; two sisters, Joanna Castelnuovo of Newark, Del., and Margaret Pomatto of Leechburg, Pa.; and 18 grandchildren.

Three sisters and a brother preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park. Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church, 701 College Parkway. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
