Richard M.
Plant Sr.
Mar 22, 1946 — Sep 15, 2026
Richard Michael Plant, Sr., age 80, of Ft. Myers, Florida, and Millersville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2026.
A devoted family man and accomplished mariner, educator, author, and entrepreneur, Richard spent more than half a century serving the maritime community. Boating and fishing brought Richard great joy, but nothing meant more to him than being with his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ellen; his children, Richard, Marisa, Carolyn, and Suzanne; eight grandchildren; his siblings; and many loving extended family members and friends.
Richard graduated early from SUNY Maritime College at Fort Schuyler in 1967, sailed to Vietnam, and later earned an Unlimited Chief Mate license. He taught at Texas Maritime Academy and MITAGS before co-founding LAPWARE in 2001. Through his work with the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Maritime Center, and MERPAC, he fiercely advocated for accurate, fair, and modernized study materials for professional mariners. He became LAPWARE’s sole owner in 2022 and guided its transition to new ownership in 2025.
Richard’s greatest legacy was his faith and family, who will forever cherish his love, intellect, and steadfast guidance.
Cremation arrangements are being handled by Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care.
