Richard Carl McGunigale

(May 8, 1930 – August 13, 2017)

Richard (Dick) Carl McGunigale, 87, a resident of Brightview in Severna Park, died on August 13, 2017, at Chesapeake Hospice.

He was born on May 8, 1930, in Johnstown, Pa., where he was raised and graduated from Johnstown High School. He previously lived in Lanham before residing in Severna Park.

Dick served proudly in the Army and is a Korean War veteran. He was a structural draftsman for many years and worked on many buildings around the DC metropolitan area. He then worked at Arlington National Cemetery as a civil engineer and received many awards, including the Army Achievement Medal upon his retirement. In his retirement, he worked at BJ's Wholesale Club in Pasadena, where his friendly demeanor was an encouragement to many. One of his favorite responses to how are you doing was, "Blessed every day."

He enjoyed traveling, cruises, & bus trips with his wife Arlene. He loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He also enjoyed many hobbies, such as golf, cross-stitch, puzzles, and singing in the choir. He was very active at his church, Severna Park Baptist Church, and served in many ways, such as being a deacon for many years. In 2014, the church bestowed on him the honor of being Deacon Emeritus.

Dick was preceded in death by his loving wife, Arlene, and they had been married for 60 years. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Leafey McGunigale, and six siblings. He was the loving father and is survived by five sons: Rick (Kathleen), Tom (Nadine), David (Paula), Mike (Linda), and Dan (Linda). He is also survived by his loving sister, Jennie Moore, and chosen brother and sister, Larry & Peggy Hughes. He was cherished and loved by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 from 3-5 p.m & 7-9 p.m. in the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home 495 Ritchie Hwy. Severna Park, MD 21146. Services will be held on Thursday August 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Severna Park Baptist Church 506 Benfield Rd. Severna Park, MD 21146. Interment will be held at a later date.
