Richard W. McClelland, a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, died on October 17th at home with his family. Richard resided in Severna Park, Maryland. He was born January 26, 1934 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Gertrude Thompson and William McClelland. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute before entering Johns Hopkins University in 1952, graduating from Hopkins with a Bachelor of Engineering Science degree. He later earned a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Harvard University.

Richard served as an engineer and manager at Westinghouse Electric Corporation for 13 years before moving on to public service as Director of Administration and Chief Budget Officer for Anne Arundel County. He then served as Program Executive under Maryland Governor Spiro T. Agnew. The latter part of Richard's career was spent in commercial real estate development, including developing The Point Condominiums on Spa Creek in Annapolis.

In 1966, the Glen Burnie Jaycees named him Outstanding Young Man of the Year, also presenting him the chapter's Distinguished Service Award.
Richard was a passionate advocate for historic preservation. He served as Director and Vice President of Historic Annapolis Foundation for over ten years and as a Trustee in the Maryland Historic Trust from 1975 to 1980. Highlights of his tenure include participating in restoration of the Paca House and Garden, and the Market House in Annapolis, Maryland. One of his most satisfying projects was directing the move of the Pinckney-Callahan house from St. John's campus to its present location on Conduit Street. He also helped save Annapolis' Maynard-Burgess House. As president of the Baldwin Crossroads Foundation, Richard was instrumental in rescuing the Charles Baldwin Memorial Hall in Millersville from demolition.
He was an accomplished singer and performed in local musicals, including Carousel and Finian's Rainbow. He volunteered for Boy Scouts of America and led his son's lacrosse team to an undefeated championship season.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife Jocelyn Rogers, his daughters Lesley Crowther Dandoy (Jeff) and Corttney McClelland Scherer (Robert), and his son Richard W. McClelland, Jr. (Katharine). He was a devoted grandfather to his 8 grandchildren; Audrey Dandoy Day (John), Jeffrey Dandoy; Mallory, Austin, Jessica, Genevieve, and Scarlet McClelland; and Grace Scherer. He is also survived by his brother, Charles T. McClelland (Lee) and his sister Marjorie Anne Marchant and nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Richard's life will be held at a future date. Donations may be made to the Lung Cancer Alliance, lungcanceralliance.org.
