On May 4, 2013, Richard E. Hug, (Dick), passed away. He was the son of Nelly Rutishauser Hug and Gustave T. Hug, born January 11, 1935.

Dick was a 1956 graduate of Duke University(BS,MF) and he began his business career with Koppers Company, Inc. He was named a Corporate Vice President of Koppers in 1973. For the ensuing 22 years, he served as President, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Environmental Elements Corporation, a company specializing in air pollution control systems for the utility and industrial markets and listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1991. In 1995, he retired and remained a Director and Chairman Emeritus until the company's sale in 2005. Other business interests included Great American Car Wash and the Eggspectation restaurant chain. He was well-known for his civic involvement and has served as Chairman of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, Maryland Business for Responsive Government, Leadership Maryland, the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the United Way of Central Maryland, and the Duke University School of the Environment. Dick also served as a Regent on the University System of Maryland Board. He was named the National Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser in 1992, and has led numerous area fund drives including those benefiting the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the United Way and the University of Maryland Medical System.

In addition, he served on the Boards of the University System of Maryland Foundation, Duke University School of Environment, Loyola University Maryland, AAA Maryland, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Bank of Annapolis. Dick has been politically active in recent years, serving as Finance Chairman for the 1998 Sauerbrey and the 2002 and 2006 Ehrlich gubernatorial campaigns. He also served as Maryland's Finance Chairman for the Bush for President Campaign in 2000 and 2004 and was accorded "Pioneer", "Team 2000", and "Super Ranger" status during the Campaigns.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lois-ann Hug, a son Donald R. Hug and his wife Deborah H. Hug, a daughter Cynthia H. Marino and her husband Mark D. Marino, four grandchildren, David, Scott, and Stephanie Marino, and Leanne Hug. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara H. Overstreet and her husband Ronald N. Overstreet.
