Richard was born in Lima Ohio on June 21, 1928 to Lorene and Wilbur Higby. His mother was a
school teacher and his father worked at IBM. When he was young he was quiet and was very
talented at drawing.

He dropped out of high school to serve in the Marines in 1945. While stationed in the pacific, he
repaired radios and airborne electronics until 1948. After his discharge from the service, he
enrolled at Tri State College in Angola, Indiana. Not long after arriving on campus he asked
Nancy to join him and she did. They were married on February 14, 1949. This was the
beginning of a love story and family legacy that is alive and present today.
With Nancy's support, Richard completed his high school and college requirements and earned
a degree in radio engineering. Now a family of three, they came to Baltimore to take a job at
Westinghouse. Richard had a distinguished career there working on airborne weapons systems
during which time he patented several inventions and attained the highest technical level of
Advisory Engineer.

Throughout this time Richard continued to build home and family. He was a man of few words
but meaningful actions. He enjoyed taking trips to Ocean City with extended family and friends,
playing Euchre, and visiting Disney World. He enjoyed being at home on the Chesapeake Bay
where he provided a welcoming environment for family and friends to gather for cookouts and
volleyball on the beach.

Richard is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter, Jo Miller; daughter-in-law, Judy Higby; son,
Mark and his wife, Karen; daughter, Beth Camilleri and her husband, Patrick; 10 Grandchildren:
Jason (Annette) Miller, Meghan(Sammy) Skemp, Beth (Aaron) Paquette, Jennifer (Ben)
Harrison, Ann Higby, Lauren Higby, Sarah (James) Knight, Emily Higby, Madeline and Grace
Camilleri, and 6 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son David; son-in-law, Leon
Miller; and brother, Tom.

Richard will be remembered as a man who loved his wife and family and lived his values every
day.

While the memorial service is private, we look forward to hosting a celebration of Richard's life
in late spring/early summer of 2018 where family and friends can gather to share memories and
toast a life well lived. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Heart Association ,
Wounded Warrior Project , or University of Maryland .
