Richard Parris Hankins lost his battle with cancer on August 13, 2016.
He was born in the small town of Tazewell, VA to his parents Imogine Slone and Marion Parris Hankins. After attending Tazewell High School, he enlisted into the United States Army. Shortly after he enlisted, he attended the Cherry Blossom Festival in 1969 and met his beautiful bride Mary Louise Hankins. They were set up by mutual friends and were married August 16, 1969 at Saint Mary's Star of the Sea. Richard graduated service school for Power Generator Equipment Repairman, Gas Turbine and Generator Repairman. He was a Vietnam veteran and his service medals included the National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service medal, Vietnam Campaign medal, Sharp Shooter Badge Rifle M14, and 2 outstanding Service Bars from November 1968 – November 1974. Upon his return to the United States, he worked as a mechanic at various service stations. In 1976 Richard began working for Larry Davenport and developed a life long friendship. With his skills and experience he eventually purchased 4 gas stations with the help of his business partners.
In 1978 his first child was born, Melissa Jean Hankins. In 1982 Mary and Richard welcomed another daughter, Jennifer Marie Hankins. Through his many years in business he mentored numerous employees and cultivated strong friendships. Anyone who has worked for Richard can tell you he was a very generous man and treated his employees like family. He enjoyed the boat trips with his buddies from Baltimore to Florida and his many fishing trips on the Chesapeake Bay.
Richard is survived by his wife of 47 years, his daughters, and two grandsons. He is also survived by his brothers Issac Hankins, Keith Hankins, and his sisters Jerri Ruth Knihnicki and Wanda Hankins.
