Richard "Dick" Dean Adams, age 78, passed away at his home in Severna Park, MD, on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.
Dick was born on October 26, 1945, in Baltimore, MD, to Richard and Frances (Taylor) Adams. He graduated from University of Baltimore with a degree in finance in 1973. He was active in many professional organizations including: Baltimore Estate Planning Council (president 1992-1993), National Association of Estate Planners and Councils (Board of Trustees 1994 - 1996), Chesapeake Planned Giving Council, Leadership Maryland (Class of 2001), Governor's Task Force on the Inheritance and Estate Laws of Maryland (1987 - 1988), Goucher College (faculty member 1989 - 1993), American Institute of Banking, S. H. Tevis & Sons, Inc. (advisory board member 1974 - 2019), Maryland Bankers Association.
He fell in love with Lynda Bernhardt in 1965 and they were married on Oct. 1, 1966.
Dick spent more than 40 years working in banking: Provident Savings Bank; Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith; Equitable Trust Company; Security Trust Company; Nations Bank, Bank of America; PNC.
He also served on many nonprofit boards in leadership roles including: Board of Childcare of the United Methodist Church (Executive Committee member 1982 - 2009, chairman 1996 - 1999), Kelso Home for Girls (board member 1982 - 2009, president 1992 - 2002), McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College) - (Board of Trustees 1997 - 2009), Marlene & Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, University of Maryland Medical Center (Executive Committee 1991 - 2004, Chairman of the Board 1998 - 2003), University of Maryland Medical System Foundation (Board of Directors 2000 - 2004), Leukemia Society of America - Maryland Chapter (Board of Directors 1985 - 1989, president 1987 - 1989), Anne Arundel County Handicapped Athletic Program (1973 - 1986, president 1981 - 1986), Maryland Special Olympics (Board of Directors 1976 - 1981), Opportunity Builders, Inc. (Board of Directors 1991 - 1993), Anne Arundel County Arc (board member 1974 - 1978), Loyola College, United Way of Central Maryland, Eva Gude Brandt Foundation (president 1991 - 2004), Helen P. Denit Foundation (chairman 1999 - 2004), Thomas W. Bradley Foundation, Kennedy Institute, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Wesley Theological Seminary (President's Advisory Council 1981 - 1983).
Dick was a 40-year resident of Severna Park and an active member in the Anne Arundel Bird Club until 2016.
Dick is forever remembered and loved by his wife Lynda of Severna Park, MD, son Thomas of Severna Park, MD, daughter Claire (Adams) Aubel and son-in-law Maj. Erik Aubel, USMC retired of Severna Park, MD; grandchildren Vivian, Spencer, Tessa and Elaine Aubel of Severna Park, Truth Robeson of San Antonio, TX, and Harper Adams of Severna Park, MD.
Family and friends may visit on Friday April 12, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., with a service to follow at 1:00 p.m., at Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care, P.A. 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, MD 21146. At a later time, Dick will be laid to rest at the Oxford Cemetery in Oxford, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. Please use the Comprehensive Donation Form, select "other" and specify "Nathan Schnaper Endowment." This provides mental health care for cancer patients.
