Richard C. "Dick C." Bartlett, Jr. of Severna Park, 100, passed away on October 11 of natural causes. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Mary Ellen (Crafton). The couple loved working in the garden and cooking together and was just six weeks shy of their 34th wedding anniversary.

Dick C. was born on March 8, 1922 in Long Beach, CA and graduated from Annapolis High School in 1940. Dick C. attended the University of Maryland before enlisting in the Navy in 1942. He flew Vought Kingfishers (an observation floatplane) in World War II and Douglas AD Skyraiders (a single-seat attack aircraft) in the Korean War during which he also was officer in charge of a six aircraft squadron. After 25 years in the Navy, Dick C. retired in 1967, achieving the rank of commander and being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Navy Air Medal.

Dick C. and his three younger brothers were introduced to sailing as young boys by their father and spent many happy summers sailing and racing dinghies on Round Bay and the Severn River. Dick C. continued his love of dinghy racing during postings in Long Beach, Coronado, Seal Beach, and San Diego. While in Coronado he helped establish Snipe Fleet 573 at the Coronado Yacht Club. During his final posting in Annapolis (1965) Dick C. became active in Snipe Fleet 532 at the Severn Sailing Association for which he'd been a founding member. Dick C. even donned waders to help build the club's bulkheads and became commodore in 1971. In 1973 he was president of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association and was a longtime member of the Annapolis Yacht Club and the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake. After retiring from the Navy in 1967, Dick C. enjoyed a 32-year career with the Equitable Insurance Company before retiring in 1999.

Dick C. is predeceased by his first wife, Frances Fisher, to whom he was married for 45 years, his eldest son, Richard C. "Ricky" Bartlett, III, and granddaughter Hanna Crafton. He is survived by his three other children: Linda Bartlett Stearns of Oxford, Robin Bartlett of Pasadena, and Jonathan Bartlett and his wife Molly of Annapolis; stepsons Jim Crafton and his wife Lise of Severna Park, and Tom Crafton and his wife Kathleen of Eagle River, Alaska; five grandchildren: Emily (Bartlett) O'Grady, Annie Bartlett, Jena, Kalena, and Ben Crafton; and three great grandchildren: Conner, Nora, and Louise O'Grady.
