Retired Master James (Jim) Daniel McCarthy, Jr., 78, a resident of Severna Park for over 40 years, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2016.
He was born on February 25, 1938 in Baltimore, MD to the late James Daniel McCarthy, Sr. and the late Lenore M. O'Connor.
Master McCarthy graduated from Loyola High School in 1957 and Loyola College in 1961. He received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1968 and became a member of the Anne Arundel County Bar Association in 1969.
Master McCarthy began his professional career teaching high school first in Georgia and then in Maryland. After passing the Bar Exam, he served as an Assistant States Attorney for two years, as a Public Defender for 17 years, and also worked in private practice. In 1996, he was appointed Master in Chancery of the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court where he served until his retirement in 2008. During his law career, he also returned to teaching as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland School of Law and Anne Arundel Community College.
Jim's greatest loves were his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was very proud of his Irish heritage and known for his kindness, warm gentle spirit, values, principles, traditions, and sense of humor.
Jim loved spending time with his family, especially Saturday night date nights with his wife. His hobbies included reading, listening to music, watching Jeopardy, the Baltimore Orioles, and travel. His ventures included Florida spring training trips, visiting ballparks and courthouses, and taking cruises.
Master McCarthy is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara D. McCarthy. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on June 10, 2016.
He is also survived by his seven children, James III and wife Maritza, Shawn, Mary Kay and husband Bill, Brian, Dan and wife Amy, Tom and wife Nina, and Michael; fourteen grandchildren, Carmen, James IV, Jessica and husband Dominic, Elizabeth, Jeremy, Olivia, Andrew, Alex, Erica, Megan, Bradley, Colby, Ella, and Quinn; and two sisters, Margaret Chaison and Mary Harlow.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Patrick and Michael and his sisters, Ella, Rose Marie, and Lenore.
Family and friends may visit on Saturday, June 25, 2016 from 5-8 PM and on Sunday, June 26, 2016 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, in Severna Park. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, June 27, 2016 at 11 AM in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Hwy, in Severna Park. Interment will follow in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, 4430 Belair Rd, Baltimore, MD 21206.
