Randall (Randy) William Pack passed away from cardiac arrest in Arnold, MD, on December 2, 2022, at the age of 82.

Randy was born on December 8, 1939, in Nashville, TN, where he lived until graduating from Vanderbilt University with a B.S. degree in Engineering, cum laude, in June 1961. He was recognized as VU's Outstanding NROTC Senior with the James G. Stahlman award. He was commissioned as Ensign in the US Navy where he served for 8 years, completing US Naval Nuclear Power School in Sept. 1963, standing 2nd in a class of 33, and completing US Naval Submarine School in Oct. 1964, standing 7th in a class of 140. He subsequently served as Chief Engineer on two US Navy nuclear submarines, including the U.S.S. Sam Rayburn.

After his Naval service, Randy completed M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Nuclear Engineering at University of California in Berkeley under an AEC Special Fellowship. In 1974, he served as a technical expert in nuclear reactor design, testing, operations, maintenance, instrumentation and safety at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, CA, where he met his future wife, Sandra (Sandy). They married on June 18, 1976, and resided in Sunnyvale, CA from 1976 to 1980. Together, they raised a daughter Amy.

In 1980, Randy, Sandy and Amy moved to Atlanta, GA, where Randy worked for the Institute for Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) and, subsequently, General Physics Corporation. In 1987, General Physics transferred Randy to their headquarters in Columbia, MD, and Randy and Sandy settled in the nearby community of Moorings on the Magothy in Arnold, MD. In 1997, Randy earned an M.S. degree in computer science from the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. Shifting his career focus from nuclear engineering to computer science, Randy worked in consulting for several employers, including General Physics Corporation and RWD Technologies. During his retirement years, from 2008 to 2022, Randy served as Adjunct Faculty at Anne Arundel Community College, teaching courses for the Peer Learning Partnership program.

Randy's family and friends remember him as a gifted scientist and a humble man of integrity, who loved his family and friends. His talents for science and education emerged early in life. He requested and received a cherished microscope for his fifth birthday so that he could study bugs. His subsequent chemistry set was a source of endless enrichment and entertainment for him and his cousins throughout their formative years. His fifth-grade schoolteacher advised his parents, "Don't ever deny your son anything in the field of science."

In 1956, Randy was selected as a National Merit Scholar at Isaac Litton High School in Nashville, TN. In 1957, 17-year-old Randy was one of two Tennesseans to receive an award in the Sixteenth Annual Science Talent Search for Science Scholarships sponsored by the Westinghouse Foundation. He won the Tennessee state-wide science fair that year.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Haze (Williamson) Pack and Ralph Leman Pack, and his older brother, Charles R. Pack.

Randy is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sandra L. Pack, his daughters, Amy Humphries of Arlington, VA, and Catherine E. Denton of Madison, AL, and his sister, Suanna Pack Pruitt of Gallatin, TN.

In accordance with his wishes, Randy's ashes will be interred in a niche at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery in Anne Arundel County, MD.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Vanderbilt University School of Engineering in Nashville, TN.
