Rear Admiral Roger Warde Paine, Jr., USN, RET, 91, of Annapolis, MD and formerly of San Diego, CA, passed away on November 15, 2008 at home after a brief illness.
Born on August 13, 1917 in Austin, Texas to the late Corine Malone Paine and RADM Roger Warde Paine, Sr., he graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1939 and received his Masters in Nuclear Physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1949.

Rear Admiral Paine served in the Navy for 37 years, serving in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. During WW II he served in submarines USS POMPANO, USS WAHOO, USS TINOSA and served in Command of USS S-34 and USS CUBERA, During this service and numerous war patrols he was awarded the Silver Star and 2 Bronze Stars with Combat "V". After obtaining his Master's Degree from MIT, he served in several critical assignments at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (New Mexico), the results of which became the foundation of this Nation's nuclear deterrent for decades to follow. He Commanded the Destroyer USS COWELL in the Korean War Theater. While serving as Chief of Analysis Branch, Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, he participated in and supervised the analysis of all data collected from all nuclear weapons tests in Nevada, Eniwetok, and Bikini from 1954 – 1956. He served as Commander Destroyer Division 282, Commanding Officer of the Cruiser USS TOPEKA and Commander Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla 10. During the developmental years of the guided missile, he served as the Head of Guided Missile Research and Development and then Director of Missile Guidance and Airframe Division. Out of this effort came BULLPUP, SIDEWINDER, SPARROW, TALOS, TARTER, and TERRIER guided missiles. RADM Paine served as Director of Navy Information Systems Division focused on procurement and operations of the Navy's computer systems. He retired from Active Naval Service in 1972 after serving as Commander, Training Command U.S. Pacific Fleet. Since then he has been involved in validating information presented in numerous written works documenting the efforts of the U.S. Submarine Force during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Isla Rea Paine (nee Vaile) of Annapolis, a son, Rev. Roger Warde Paine, III of Lincoln, Mass, two daughters, Penny Moore of Grasonville, MD and Barbara Cramer of Stroudsburg, PA, He is survived by 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and preceded in death by two sisters, Peggy Whyte and Helen Davis.

Graveside Services will be held at the United States Naval Academy Cemetery on Wednesday, November 19th at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to National Parkinson Foundation, Inc., Office of Development, 1501 NW 9th Avenue/ Bob Hope Road, Miami, Florida 33136-1494.
