Phyllis Johnson Weitzel passed away peacefully on March 5. Wife of the late George Weitzel and previously the late Charles Johnson,Jr., Phyllis was born on December 8, 1925 to John Moody, USN Ret. and Viola Stackman Moody in Annapolis, Maryland. She grew up in Annapolis with her older siblings Herbert Moody, USN Ret. And Virginia Pollock.

After graduating from Annapolis High school in 1942 she was inspired by her father and brother who both served in the US Navy and the events of World War II and volunteered with the Red Cross at the original Anne Arundel Hospital in Annapolis. She served there for the duration of the war which led to her signing up for the Registered Nurse program at University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore where she worked and studied until she graduated in 1949 with a degree in Nursing.

During her training she met her future husband Charles Johnson and after her graduation they married and she took a job as an RN in the obstetric ward of U of MD hospital. Phyllis became head nurse of the department and continued to work until moving to Severna Park to raise their two daughters. Tragedy struck in 1962 when her then husband Charles suddenly died and left her a single mother.

In 1965 Phyllis met and married George Weitzel who was a widower with three boys. Phyllis and George raised their "Brady Bunch" family in their home in Round Bay and Phyllis worked again as a nurse for a local physician. She then got a job working back at the University of Maryland Hospital in Quality Assurance until retiring in 1989 and moving to Ocean Pines to enjoy golf, friends and travel for many years.

After the death of George in 2008 Phyllis moved to Brightview independent living and then to In Comforting Arms Hospice Care in 2017 when her health began failing. Under the care of the wonderful staff there and the medical team of Hospice of the Chesapeake she remained comfortable and happy with visits from family and friends until her passing.

She will always be remembered by those who love her for her strength, fortitude, moral compass and her gentle caring ways. A fashionista, avid sports fan and nurse to the end, Phyllis enjoyed life to the fullest and was an inspiration with her unfailing positive attitude and dignity no matter what life threw her way.

Family and friends may visit on Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 6-8 pm in the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 11 am. Interment will be private.

Phyllis is survived by her five children and their spouses; Blair Weitzel (Connie Weitzel), Cink DeVeas (Steven DeVeas), Blaine Weitzel (Jeannie Weitzel), Brian Weitzel (Mary Weitzel) and Stacey Weitzel (Margo McLean), plus eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Phyllis requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to In Comforting Arms, 113 Giddings Avenue, Severna Park, Maryland, whose staff took such brilliant care of her in her final months.
