Philip Moritz Kuhn, 81, a resident of Severna Park for 34 years, passed away on September 10, 2015 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease.
Phil was born in 1934 in West Springfield, Massachusetts. He was raised in Massachusetts
and Burlington, Vermont and was a resident of Camden, Maine and Edina, Minnesota
before settling in Severna Park, MD.
He received his Bachelor's Degree from The University of Vermont in 1956 and then
was stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA where he worked in the Engineering Research and
Development Laboratory until 1959. He received his Masters Degree from The Catholic
University of America in Mechanical and Acoustical Engineering.
In 1966 Phil married Virginia Engleman of Annapolis and they moved to Camden, ME
and worked for Tibbetts Industries for five years. He worked for Telex Communications in Minneapolis, MN for ten years. In 1981 the family moved to Severna Park. From 1981-1995 Phil worked for Martin Marietta where he earned numerous patents. In 1994 he received the honor of Martin Marietta Inventor of the Year for the invention of the key hardware discriminator in the lightweight, Broadband variable-depth Sonar, which was the largest advance technology demonstration the U.S. Navy had ever undertaken. His hobbies were biking, tennis, hiking, woodworking, wood chopping, camping, and music.
He was a member of The Acoustical Society of America and The Singers Madrigale.
He is survived by his wife, Ginny, and their daughter Christiana Rakow of Silver
Spring and a son, Dan Kuhn of Catonsville. They have three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 20th at 4:00 PM at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD. 21741-5014
