Philip J. Jones Sr., 88, of Arnold, died of heart failure Dec. 8 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
The son of the late Spencer C. and Lenora D. Jones, Mr. Jones was born May 3, 1918, in Baltimore and reared in south Baltimore. He and his family were part-time residents of Shore Acres in Arnold since 1925. He attended Southern High School and the Maryland Institute in Baltimore.
He married the former Edna M. Goldstraw, and he and his family became permanent residents of Shore Acres in 1947.
He was employed with his brothers in construction, building homes in Arnold, Severna Park, Pasadena and Annapolis. He also worked at Bay Side Cabinet Co. in Annapolis and for 9½ years at the former Anne Arundel General Hospital when it was located on Franklin Street.
As a young man he played guitar and ukulele in a band in Baltimore. He enjoyed wood working, arts and crafts and building wooden toys for his family. He helped his children and friends with home projects.
Mr. Jones was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Arnold and Broadneck Elks Lodge 2608. He volunteered with the Arnold Volunteer Fire Department, and was a longtime member of the Shore Acres Improvement Association.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sharon Steele of Arnold; a son, James S. Jones of Angola, Ind.; one brother, Arthur M. Jones of Stevensville; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Jones was the father of the late Philip J. Jones Jr. and the brother of the late Evelyn Repella and George P., Spencer C. and William F. Jones.
