Born in England in 1939, Peter’s father was a boat builder and had a boat yard on an area of widened rivers called the Norfolk Broads. Hence, he grew up with a love of sailing, fishing and boating. Upon receiving his Ph.D. in metallurgy from Cambridge University, he became a part of the 1960’s “brain drain”- U.S. scientists were going into the space program-so industries were recruiting scientists from Europe. In Pittsburgh, he initially worked in the research center for United States Steel and later in planning and development. While living in Pittsburgh, he sailed a laser and subsequently a Flying Scot, going to Deep Creek Lake for races on the weekends.

When his daughter graduated High School, he and his to-be wife, June moved to the Annapolis area for extended sailing opportunities. He worked for the Department of Energy in promoting energy efficiency and conservation, traveling to countries in Asia and Africa to encourage more environmentally friendly ways of developing energy resources. As a member of Severn Sailing Association, he raced in the Snipe fleet and later the Day Sailor fleet while continuing to also race the Flying Scot.

He also developed a love of running and became a long-time member of the Annapolis Striders. He qualified for the Boston Marathon in the first marathon he ever ran and subsequently ran a marathon on every continent.

As a player of duplicate bridge, he attended various tournaments and acquired the ranking of Silver Life Master.

His charm and good humor will be greatly missed by his wife, June Schneider, his daughter Sara Chapman, son-in-law David Chapman and grandson Caleb Chapman. He is also survived by his sister, Penny Heymans of Norway, brother Timothy Salmon-Cox of England and step-son Weir Strange.
