Orie De Young, 83, of Arnold, a decorated combat veteran of World War II, died April 19 of complications of Alzheimer's at Morningside House of Friendship in Hanover.

Born May 3, 1923, in Prospect Park, N.J., Mr. De Young attended Hawthorne High School and Paterson Vocational School. He served in the Army during World War II in the Armored Tank Corps in the Pacific Theater. He received the Pacific Campaign Medal among other decorations.

He retired in 1983 with 45 years of service as an experimental machinist and shop planner in both the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Naval Research and Development Lab in Annapolis.

He was an active member of Temple Baptist Church in Glen Burnie and was instrumental in founding Calvary Baptist Church Academy where he served on the building committee and school board. His interests included fishing, wood working, stained glass and serving the Lord, his family said.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret De Young; two sons, John and Mark De Young, both of Stevensville; two daughters, Barbara Breen of Haledon, N.J., and Margaret "Peggy" Norris of Millersville; and nine grandchildren.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Service will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Temple Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
